module madness

I chose to use coke cans because i knew i had alot of them. my originial idea was a little more complicated, as i thought about doing kind of a coke tower city. then i thought about linking those towers together with fishingline and hanging the taps from the tops from the line, making it look like a shower of silvery little taps. i made the towers but drilling holes in the cans and sticking a very long skewer through it. i talked to mr. davenport and he felt like it wouldn't add much and i should keep going with one tower. so i added an extra foot to the tower. i ran into an installation problem, as we could not agree on how to install it without hurting the building. so i took it outside and chose to put it on the hill so it would look as tall as possible from the bottom of the hill.

cardboard

I picked the cow jawbone for my cardboard sculpture project. my first idea was to cut two templates out in the shape of the jawbone's outline.. these would be the sides of the sculpture. Then i cut out 4 teeth, which i would put between the two sides. the hard part was to get the swervy form down and also to have a varing thickness throughout. First i curved the cardboard in my hands, making them more bendable, and less ridgid. I took the ends, the point of the chin and the joint where the bone meets the skull, and glued the two sides down, holding them in place  in the angle i wanted them to be in. they dried with a warp in them, as i wanted. the warp carried on throughout the whole piece, and i just looked to manipulate the warp through a process of bending, glueing and clamping them down. i added crumbled paper in the inside of the sculpture to push sides out and give it more thickness. I also added extra layers of cardboard to make it thicker, with varying depths.

Human dots

I asked my girlfriend and her roommate to help me by agreeing to be in the photos. So saturday afternoon i went to their apartment and we took the photos in their backyard. In my first dot compisitions there looked to me like there were two seperate lines of movement, with one line being made of bigger dots and one smaller. So i decided to put the smaller dots in the background to make it look like their smaller because of distance. On my second there was  a line that reminded me of a persons' legs so i started with the idea of legs and worked from there, trying to make the other points fit. Looking at it now, I think my first human dot photo was better, because like i said on the second photo, I was too stuck on the leg idea. I probably should have come up with a whole other idea as it basically just became a game of lets see how we can postion ourselves so were aligned right, without a real idea behind it.

newspaper project

Our first 3d project was to make a structure out of newspaper that could hold up a cement block. My first idea was to take newspaper and crumble them into little balls. I feel like a crumbled up ball takes up more space than a sheet, and also that the paper would just be compressed, not toople over or tear. But i soon realized i needed some way of holding all the balls together or the balls would slide and get pushed away under the weight of the block. so i took all the newspaper balls, and bundled them together  by placing the balls in the middle of page of newspaper and wrapping them up into it. each of these bundles were about as big as the cement block itself. It was working up to a point and i got a measurement of 7 inches. But i wanted to try to do better and buid on to it. So i made serveral more bundles. But i tested the structure several times and each time it tore the newspaper a little. so eventually the strucure was destroyed and I had to start over. seeing as how i only had aboiut 15 minutes left i hurried, tearing a new stack of newspaper into 4ths and stacking them on top of each other. I think i got like 3 inches or something like that.
